Why religion, why God? Can people not live in a world where there is no metaphysical being?

Question for those that are spiritual and/or metaphysical...?
I am currently going through a devastating break up. I absolutely love my girlfriend but we have had a few issues and she is having her own family issues and feels that she needs time to not be in a relationship. I do love her entirely and I know she loves me but I know there's nothing I can say or do at this point to stop the break up. The odd part is this We work at the same school two different positions and I was just laid off but re hired in another school district. The break up occurred just last weekend and in literally one day I found the perfect place to live where I can have my dogs there are four , Also, I had found a therapist just before the break up. So, of course, I'm devastated but I see that clearly the universe had helped me out in incredible ways. The thing is that, I feel an incredible amount of fear and insecurity about all of these changes...living alone again, sleeping alone again, being without the woman that I love. I haven't slept well at all since the break up and now I'll be starting a new job, living in a new place and without the person that I want to be with. Last night, I laid in bed so anxious that I couldn't take it, Does anyone have healthy advice for how to get through this? Thanks
