Question: Why do people believe in alien abductions,rein act battles in period costumes,become a member of a cult?

Why do people believe in alien abductions, rein act wars, become a member of a cult such as Jehovah witnesses. Are we a doomed species, who are these people, why did they evolve without logic or basic reasoning skills, are they blissfully numb to the world around them, are we better off digressing or progressing...etc and so forth.
